i. Upgrading from Ver. 2

!! Version 2 users, please read before installing Version 3 !!

This version will require a new activation key. Therefore, it will revert to a 10-units limit after installation. You may see a message "Tones/Emails file exceeded limit. Please upgrade license." DO NOT save the alert list until your new key has been entered (see Registration instructions below). Otherwise, you will lose all but the first 10 tone and email entries. Once your new activation key has been accepted, restart SafAlert. Now all your tones and email entries should be displayed, and it is safe to save and backup your files.

Starting with Version 3, there will be an annual license fee. This will enable us to continue support and development of the Alert Notifier software.

SafAlert Ver.3 program data files are now stored in the common application data folder (same for all Windows users). In version 2, if a different user logged in to Windows, program settings may not be available. This new method ensures the same settings and data files will be used regardless of which user is logged in to Windows.

When version 3 is run for the first time after upgrading, you will see notifications messages that old settings and data files have been imported:

"Settings imported successfully."

"Ver.2 Email List imported successfully."

Old files will be renamed, but will NOT be deleted. Therefore, it will be possible to restore them later if for some reason you revert back to Version 2. Old files names will be appended with ".bak" extension.

While not required, it is recommended that you perform a Backup of SafAlert data files BEFORE installing Version 3. See Section 2.5, using the SafAlert Console.

For more about settings and data files, see Appendix C.

2. Connect Receiver Audio

2.1 connect receiver's speaker output to one of the computer sound card inputs, MIC (usually pink/red), LINE (usually blue), or AUX input:

Preferred method: Using a 1/8" computer audio or iPod cable (either mono or stereo type should work)

iPod cable

Sound card connections

2.1.1 Alternate method for audio capture:

If your computer has a microphone connected, simply place the microphone near the radio receiver's speaker.

2.2 Verify receiver is tuned to the correct frequency, and receiving desired dispatch station clearly (excessive static or interference can cause missed alerts). Receiver volume should be no higher than about 25%. If using a scanning receiver, it is best NOT to scan, as this can cause critical parts of tone transmissions to be missed. Keep the scanner in MANUAL mode to avoid missing calls.

2.3 Be sure computer speakers are connected, turned on and volume up part way.

NOTE: If you don't have a way to connect audio directly from radio to computer, place the computer microphone close to receiver's speaker (even a walkie-talkie will work fine for this). The downside is background noise will be picked up and recorded too.
